Stanford Scientists Are Trying to Create a “Quantum Internet” Which Would Be Untraceable

If there’s ever going to be a totally secure quantum internet, we’re going to have to overcome some significant challenges.

Among the most critical will be devices that can send and receive quantum data. To that end, researchers at Stanford University have created a novel quantum light source that might someday serve as the basis for quantum communication. They explained their findings in a paper published in Nature Photonics.

The physics of quantum communication is admittedly complex. Standard lasers are actually not useful for secure communication because they emit what is called “classical” light. Data eavesdroppers could extract any data being carried via classical light without detection.

In contrast, a quantum internet would be based on “quantum” light, in which a single unit of light—a single photon—cannot be measured without being destroyed. Therefore, an efficient source of quantum light would enable perfectly secure communication.

Senior author Jelena Vuckovic, a professor of electrical engineering, has been working for years to develop various nanoscale lasers and quantum technologies that might help conventional computers communicate faster and more efficiently using light instead of electricity. She and her team, including lead author Kevin Fischer, a doctoral candidate, realized that a modified nanoscale laser can be used to efficiently generate quantum light for quantum communication.

“The problem is that the quantum light is much weaker than the rest of the light coming from such a modified laser—it is difficult to pick up,” Vuckovic says. “So, we created a way to filter out the unwanted light, allowing us to read the quantum signal much better.”

The filtering works in a fashion similar to the way noise-canceling headphones operate, only with light, instead of sound. With the headphones, a sensor actively gauges the frequency of relatively constant ambient sound—the rumble of traffic, the drone of an airplane engine, the thrum of a refrigerator—and produces a similar pattern, which can be used to cancel out the undesirable sound.

“Some of the light coming back from the modified laser is like noise, preventing us from seeing the quantum light,” Fischer says. “We canceled it out to reveal and emphasize the quantum signal hidden beneath.”

Vuckovic’s team adapted an interference technique borrowed from 1930s-era radio engineering to cancel the unwanted classical light. They first figured out what the “noise” looks like and played it back. By carefully adjusting how the canceling light and the classical light overlap, the unwanted light is canceled and the once-hidden quantum light is revealed.

“This is a very promising development,” Vuckovic says. “It provides us with a practical pathway to secure quantum communications.”

She and her team are now working on creating a working prototype.

Freedom 251: Mobile Industry Raises Concerns Over Rs. 251 Smartphone

Expressing concern over the launch of a smartphone at price as low as Rs. 251, mobile industry body ICA has written to Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to get into depth of the issue, saying the rate could not be below Rs. 3,500 even after a subsidised sale.

The Indian Cellular Association (ICA) also said that it is not appropriate for the senior political and government leadership to be present at the launch till the air around this is cleared and it is not shrouded under controversies.
Noida-based Ringing Bells has launched India's most affordable smartphone, the Freedom 251 priced at Rs 251, a move that is set to disrupt the booming Indian mobile handset market.
The 3G handset, Freedom 251, features a 4-inch display, 1.3-GHz quad-core processor, and 1GB of RAM, according to details shared by the company.

"For your kind information, the bill of material (BOM) value for a product like this when sourced from the cheapest supply chain cost approximately $40 (Rs 2,700). "And this, when translated into retail price after addition of applicable duties, taxes and with distribution and retail margins would be at least Rs. 4,100 while the product is being sold at Rs. 251," ICA National President Pankaj Mohindroo said in the letter.
He further added that even if the product is sold at lower margins in an e-commerce type subsidised sale, the final consumer price cannot come below $52-55 (about Rs. 3,500-3,800).

"Further, there is no visible mobile operator subsidy involved in this, which in any case is not the way the Indian mobile market operates," he added.
Mohindroo said it would be advisable that officers from Deity get into the depth of this and ICA will provide any technical assistance, if required.
"We are bringing this to your kind notice, so that a scenario does not arise in the future, where the nation, the government of India, industry and trade are seen in a poor light," the letter added.

Freedom 251: Your 5-Point Cheat Sheet to the Rs. 251 Smartphone

Ringing Bells, a little-know Noida-based company, has launched what it is calling India's most affordable smartphone, but Freedom 251 might well be the cheapest smartphone in the world. Here's what you need to know about the Freedom 251.

  1. Ringing Bells had announced earlier that the Freedom 251 will be priced at "less than Rs. 500". But we can now confirm that the smartphone will be priced at Rs. 251 (less than $4). At that price, it's easily the most affordable smartphone in the world.
  2. The website also lists important specifications of the Freedom 251: 4-inch display, 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage (expandable up to 32GB), 3.2-megapixel back camera, 0.3-megapixel front camera, and a 1450mAh battery.

  3. The Freedom 251 will be officially unveiled in New Delhi on Wednesday evening at an event that will be presided over by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, MP, with the Union Defence Minister Sri Manohar Parrikar as the Chief Guest.
  4. Ringing Bells says the Freedom 251 smartphone has been developed 'with immense support' from the government and is touting it as a success story of PM Modi's flagship 'Make in India' scheme.

  6. A smartphone priced at Rs. 251 will go a long way in connecting every Indian, and like the previous government tried to take computing to the masses with the Aakash tablet, the Freedom 251 has the potential to realise the 'Digital India' vision.

Bookings for the Freedom 251 open on February 18 at 6am and close on 21 February at 8pm. The company says deliveries will be completed by 30th June 2016. The Freedom 251 will be available via itswebsite.

Freedom 251 Maker Ringing Bells Comes Under Excise, IT Department Scanners

Ringing Bells, makers of the world's cheapest smartphone, has come under the scanner of excise and income tax departments as debates around the feasibility of offering a Rs. 251 handset rages on.
According to the sources, the IT Department is looking into the financial structure of the Noida-based company and have obtained documents, including those from the Registrar of Companies (RoC), in this regard.

"Yes, there was a visit from excise department and IT Department. Since we are planning to achieve milestones under Make in India, Skill India and Startup India. They issued us some guidelines for future and extended full support and cooperation," Ringing Bells President Ashok Chaddha said in a statement to PTI.
Earlier this week, Ringing Bells launched the world's cheapest smartphone for Rs. 251 amid great fanfare.
However, the celebrations haven't lasted long as the firm was surrounded in controversy around showcasing a rival company, Adcom's handset, as its own.

Chaddha clarified that "it wanted to show a sample or prototype of what the handsets will look like. This is not the final piece."
"In view of the shortage of time and given that these were to serve only as prototypes given FOC to a limited list of persons, we went ahead. We would clearly mention that the Final Freedom 251 manufactured  assembled in India would be to identical specs - i.e. no change," he added.

The industry members have also complained against the company to the Telecom Ministry to dig deeper into the issue.
The ministry has sought a clarification from Ringing Bells for marketing its Freedom 251 mobile phone without a BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification and has also asked the Uttar Pradesh government to check the firm's credentials.
The company said it has received 37 million registrations on Day 1 and 24.7 million on Day 2 (as of 19:49 hrs).

Freedom 251 Smartphone: More Questions Than Answers

The Freedom 251 smartphone will official be unveiled by manufacturer Ringing Bells in India shortly, and it seems to be the cheapest smartphone in the whole world. Running Android 5.1, it sounds on paper like a usable phone - it might not impress anyone, but at a price of just Rs. 251, it doesn't exactly need to blow you away in terms of performance. However, there are some points for concern about the phone, as was noticed when we first got our Freedom 21 unit.

What's more, the UI of the Freedom 251 has been customised to look a lot like an iPhone. In fact, many of the icons look identical to apps that ship with Apple's phone, which makes us wonder if it will attract some attentions from lawyers at Cupertino.
That's not the only cause for concern though. All phones sold in India must be certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Getting this certification done is both time consuming and expensive. However, it appears that the BIS registration of the Ringing Bells Freedom 251 has not been done, as it is not listed in the list of manufacturers registered by BIS. This means that if the phone is a new device made by Ringing Bells, then it has not been certified as safe for use in India.

What this means is that the Adcom A400, or at least some variant thereof, could well be the origin of the Freedom 251. That phone was made two years ago, and if old stock were to be repurposed, it would explain the relatively low cost of the phones. It still sounds like a great deal at Rs. 251, though perhaps less of a Make in India accomplishment than it is being made out to be.
Gadgets 360 wrote to a Ringing Bells representative asking about concerns raised in this article, and we received a mail that stating "all answers will be given on stage in the presence of the ministers". Let's hope we get answers to our questions about Freedom 251 shortly.

Rs. 251 Smartphone Bookings Stopped as Company Servers are 'Overloaded'
Planning to buy the Rs. 251 smartphone? You might have missed your chance. The world's cheapest smartphone went on sale this morning via freedom251.com but people were already having problems booking the phone. Now however, the option to buy the phone seems to have disappeared completely, as the company claims that its servers have been overloaded. When you visit the Freedom 251 website you will see the site, but clicking on the buy now button takes you to an error page now.
On the website, the Ringing Bells team claims that it was seeing six lakh hits per second on the webpage, which overloaded its servers. For this reason, the company has decided to take a pause and upgrade the service, which will return within 24 hours. You can see the full text in the screenshot below.
freedom_website_down.jpg

However, at the time of the launch of the Freedom 251 on Wednesday, the company President Ashok Chadha had stated that after 2.5 lakh units are sold on the website, it will stop accepting further orders. It's not clear if this is still the case or not, or how many orders Ringing Bells has recieved yet for what is probably the world's cheapest smartphone.
On paper, the Freedom 251 is a Rs. 251 smartphone that comes with a 4-inch display, a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage (expandable by up to 32GB), and runs Android 5.1. However, the review units which were shared might not have been made by Ringing Bells at all so as of now, we can't really tell you whether this phone is too good to be true or not.
For now however, the Freedom 251 is simply not available, and if you believe that it is the real deal and wanted to buy it, you might have missed your shot.

Ringing Bells Stops Taking Bookings for Freedom 251 Smartphone

Mired in controversy, Ringing Bells, the makers of the world's cheapest smartphone, on Saturday closed the booking for its 'Freedom 251' phone, citing heavy demand.
Announcing the closure of booking, the company said, "We are humble and extremely grateful for your overwhelming response and trust. Respectfully, this is to advise that the response far exceeds the number that we had expected and therefore, we are now closing the invitation to bookings in this phase 1."
The notice on the website read: "We appreciate and acknowledge that we may not have been able to meet the needs of all, but will definitely look forward to serving you again in the next phase."
The company said it has received 37 million registrations on Day 1 and 24.7 million on Day 2 (as of 1949 hours). Touted as the world's cheapest smartphone, the Freedom 251 has been in news globally for several reasons. There were allegations that the company had showcased a rival company, Adcom's handset, as its own. Also, the icons on the device looked similar to that of global technology giant, Apple.
Ringing Bells President Ashok Chaddha clarified that it "wanted to show a sample or prototype of what the handsets will look like. This is not the final piece".
"In view of the shortage of time and given that these were to serve only as prototypes to a limited list of persons, we went ahead. We would clearly mention that the final Freedom 251 manufactured/assembled in India would be to identical specs - i.e. no change," he added.
Industry members have also complained against the company to the Telecom Ministry to dig deeper into the issue. The ministry has sought a clarification from Ringing Bells for marketing its 'Freedom 251' mobile phone without a BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification and has also asked the Uttar Pradesh government to check the firm's credentials.
Besides, it has also come under the scanner of excise and income tax departments with the IT Department looking into the financial structure of the Noida-based company.
According to sources, the department has obtained documents, including those from the Registrar of Companies (RoC), in this regard.

World’s Cheapest Android Phone at the Price of Rs.251 or $4 Officially Launched

World’s Cheapest Android Phone at the Price of Rs.251 Freedom 251 Officially Launched; No Government Involvement, Confirms Company.

At an event presided by BJP MP Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi in New Delhi on Wednesday evening, India's Rs. 251 smartphone the Ringing Bell Freedom 251 was officially launched. The themes of Digital India, Skill India, and Make in India were given a lot of importance at the launch event, as the potential use cases of the phone to empower citizens in rural and semi-urban areas were highlighted.

The company did not share too many details, but stated the although the chipset will be imported from Taiwan at present, the rest of Freedom 251 would be made in India; the goal is to make up to 75 percent of the hardware in India by the end of one year, and to raise this to 100 percent over time, said Ringing Bells President Ashok Chadha. To accomplish this, the company is looking at investing in two manufacturing plants - in Noida and Uttaranchal - immediately as a pilot project at an estimated cost of Rs. 500 crore, with a targeted capacity of 5 lakh units each per month, with a goal of having five manufacturing centres in total over time, Chadha added.

He also confirmed that there is no government subsidy for the phone, and nor is there any involvement from the government, beyond a long time friendship with MP Murli Manohar Joshi, who provided "vision and guidance" for the Freedom 251 project.
The eventual goal, according to the company, is to sell over 1 crore units per month. At the launch, Chadha also confirmed that if the number of orders crosses 2.5 lakhs, the company will have to stop taking further orders.
The Ringing Bells Freedom 251 runs on Android 5.1, with a 4-inch display, a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage (expandable to 32GB). The phone, which can be booked online until Saturday, is priced at an amazingly low Rs. 251, but you may have to wait a few months to actually get the phone, as units may be delivered as late as June 30.

Speaking at the launch, MP Murli Manohar Joshi praised the phone, and talked about the importance, not just of increased digital penetration in India, but also of making products in India. "Unless India innovates and makes something new, it cannot progress," he said. "Because if technology is expensive then it's useless. You need technology for everyone, for fishermen and farmers and students. But technology that is cheap should also still be useable, cheap by itself is not enough."

"The bill of materials [cost of the parts] for a phone like this is around Rs. 2,000 - by making in India we take away around Rs. 400 from that; by selling online we cut overheads and save another Rs. 400," explained Chadha. "And as the numbers go up, we're not talking lakhs but much more, we save another Rs. 400 from economies of scale. And then, our platform becomes big, and attractive to others, so we can then highlight products that are worth buying for our customers, and this is another source of income. We will pass all of this on to the customers, we want to make only a small profit per unit."
This was a point Chadha repeated more than once, but although the points about making in India and economies of scale from increased manufacturing make sense, assuming a Rs. 400-500 saving through online sales seems a bit odd - while that is a saving on the total costs involved in selling phones, it doesn't cut into the bill of materials, which is the cost of the components of the phone, and won't be affected whether the phone is sold online or offline.
"This is just the first step, and over time we will introduce more handsets, at different price points as well. And in a year or two we want to launch a Bell SIM card which will also have some unique features," added Mohit Goel, Director, Ringing Bells.
It's an interesting idea, though an untried one; and as of now, all the company really has is a prototype put together from off-the-shelf parts. Although selling a phone at Rs. 251 is a huge accomplishment that could make a real impact in India, there are still some concerns about this phone, most particularly the lack of BIS certification. The company did not respond to a question about BIS certification, and only said that the phone being shown presently is merely a prototype. Licensing and certification can be major hurdles though, and could well throw a spanner in the works when it comes to the plans the company has shared thus far.
